Bio-fermented ingredients that nourish your good bacteria
From the Founder
At the heart of Kioni is Maria Mandroules - founder, mum of four, and former Emergency Nurse Practitioner with two Masters degrees in Nursing (Critical Care & Nurse Practitioner) from the University of Sydney and the University of Newcastle.
Maria spent years working at the frontline of healthcare, caring for people through some of their most vulnerable moments. So when her youngest son developed eczema, she brought that same clinical rigour home - researching and seeking out the best solution she could find for his skin.
What she couldn't find on the shelf, she set out to create. Working with PhD cosmetic scientists and microbiome specialists here on the Gold Coast, Maria developed a range built around barrier support, with gentle, effective ingredients chosen for people whose skin needs a little more consideration.
That personal mission became Kioni. Whether your skin is sensitive, reactive, or simply requires more care than most products offer, our range is designed to nourish, protect, and restore - without compromise.
Our Inspiration
Kioni is a tiny village on the Greek Blue Zone island of Ikaria - a place so remarkable it's known as 'the island where people forget to die.' Here, people take regular naps, enjoy time with friends, observe traditional dietary fasts, follow a Mediterranean diet, walk everywhere, and sip on herbal teas.
As someone with Greek island roots - my parents were born on Lesvos - this way of life resonates deeply with me. At Kioni Skin, we believe these same simple, mindful practices are key to nurturing a healthy, balanced skin microbiome. Just like the people of Ikaria, your skin thrives when life is in balance.
The Microbiome
Healthy skin starts from within. Your gut microbiome, through the gut-skin-brain axis, plays a significant role in how your skin looks, feels, and responds to the world around it. When gut microbes become out of sync (a state called dysbiosis), it can show up on your skin as sensitivity, redness, or an impaired barrier.
That's where science meets skincare. Bio-fermented botanicals, prebiotics, probiotic extracts, and postbiotics can help support balance, reinforce the skin's natural defences, and promote a healthier microbiome environment. At Kioni Skin, we harness these innovations to create products that work with your skin - not against it.
Because when your microbiome is balanced, your skin feels it.
