WHAT IS MICROBIOME SKINCARE?

WHAT IS MICROBIOME SKINCARE?

Before we define what microbiome skincare is, let’s talk about the microbiome itself. We have been told we need to nurture it but, what is it and what is it made up of?

The field of microbiome research has rapidly evolved over the last few decades, and the term ‘microbiome’ has been used interchangeably with microbiota, on social media, but they are actually different things.

The microbiome is the whole collection of microorganisms (microbiota) that live in and on our body².

There are an estimated 30 trillion cells in our body, and less than ⅓ of those are human. The other 70-90% are made up of bacteria and fungi, with some viruses, phages and archaea as well. Whether they are part of our microbiome or not, bacteria love to live in ‘communities’ and interact with one another¹.

Where is our microbiome exactly?

Microbiomes exist in every human body ecosystem that has been examined². Yes- you are not the sterile landscape you thought you were! Current thoughts are that the uterus is not even sterile, and that by 6 weeks of age, body site-specific microbiomes have been formed. Some of these are³:

•Skin
•Gut
•Oral cavity (mouth)
•Lungs
•Vagina

Why is the microbiome important?

So if people are mostly made up of microbes, then it shouldn’t surprise us that the microbiome plays an important role in our overall health and wellbeing. Or that disrupting microbiome balance (called dysbiosis), could have consequences¹.

Dysbiosis can lead to a damaged skin barrier which has been linked with skin conditions such as:

•Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)
•Psoriasis
•Acne

People with a weakened or damaged skin barrier experience increased discomfort, sensitivity, inflammation and increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL)⁴. The skin can also be susceptible to accelerated skin ageing.

Protecting your skin with microbiome skincare

Studies have shown the positive impact of adding probiotics and prebiotics into skincare. Several have shown that the use of probiotic skincare can improve the symptoms and severity of eczema as compared to normal moisturisers⁴.

What is effective microbiome skincare?

When skin health and skin barrier integrity is what you're looking for, it is important to understand what ingredients will support your microbiome.

At Kioni Skin, we have partnered with the best PhD microbiome researchers in Australia, and we make sure that our prebiotic, probiotic and postbiotic skincare products are enriched with clean, bioactive fermented and metabolite-rich ingredients to nurture and support your microbiome. We carefully select each ingredient so that it is tailor-made with beneficial bioactive compounds rather than just choosing 'natural' or 'organic' ingredients.

Some of our unique and powerful ingredients to help promote microbiome homeostasis (a fancy word for balance) include XOBiome®Epic, XOBiome®Protect (a formula specifically tailored to consider the intricacies of the microbiome) and XOBiome®NMF.
